HP Officejet won't install via USB

I have an HP Officejet Pro L7580 that I purchased specifically because my old printer wouldn't work with Vista. The disk that came with the printer was for XP only, and I downloaded the Vista package from HP.

Every time I try to install, I wait until I'm instructed to connect the USB cable to the computer, but Plug&Play comes up and tries to install the printer and can't find the drivers. My impression is that I don't want P&P to try to install it - that's why the instructions tell you not to connect the USB cable to the computer until told to do so.

I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted the infcache, uninstalled all the USB controllers and hubs, followed the instructions in the support document at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00843708. I can't even point it to the right driver, since I don't know what driver is needed and the driver apparently never gets installed because I can't get past the connection screen.
